What is compliance
When you think about compliance training, what comes to mind? Annual ‘click next to continue’ training which ticks a reporting box? Or something more substantial?
Being able to demonstrate compliance, whether to laws, regulations or even internal policies, is a key requirement for many organisations. But traditional ‘compliance training’ isn’t serving those organisations or their staff well. Because let’s be honest, clicking through a series of slides once a year is unlikely to prepare you sufficiently for an urgent health and safety situation. Often, the dreaded ‘annual mandatory training’ simply becomes something staff get over with so they can get back to work.
But compliance exists for a reason. Whether that’s keeping people safe and healthy at work, protecting financial assets or ensuring pilots are safe to fly, actual compliance (genuine behavioural compliance not just a tick box exercise) is critical to a safe and successful workplace.
So what do we mean by behavioural compliance? We mean that your people don’t just know what the right behaviours are, but they display them every day at work. And to achieve this takes a more holistic approach, supported by behavioural science. It’s not just about telling people (once a year) what they should do, but about supporting those behaviours through the work environment, processes, training and ongoing development checks. That’s not to say there’s no place for regular mandatory training, just that it isn’t the complete picture. And that’s where we think a tool like Totara can help.
So, are you interested in delivering behavioural compliance in your organisation, which keeps both the regulators happy and your people, assets and organisation safer? Then you’re in the right place. In this course you’ll explore how to:
Design a compliance program that positively impacts the way your people behave at work
Identify appropriate compliance activities based on your organisation’s needs
Map your activities to the five stages of behaviour change
Identify the appropriate Totara features to support your compliance programme
To complete the course and achieve your course badge, you’ll need to log in, or create a Community account.
Join the conversation
Did you know that we have a dedicated workspace on compliance, where you can share experiences and ask questions of the Totara team or other Community users? We encourage you to join this workspace as part of completing this course so that you can share best practice ideas and ask questions.
Reflect
This course is about compliance. But before you get started, think about your own experiences of compliance at work. What kinds of activities have you completed in order to achieve compliance, and what impact did they have on the way you work? Were they effective or ineffective?
It may help to think about these questions:
What is the purpose of compliance at work?
What compliance interventions have you found to be most effective?
Have you experienced ineffective compliance activities? If so, why were they ineffective?
What role does compliance play in your organisation? Could it be improved? What would be the benefits of improving it if so?
Here at the Totara Community, we love to learn from each other. If you are willing to, please share your answers in this discussion in the Compliance workspace.
